Click for 4th Annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence

This year marks the 20th 16 days Activism Against Gender Violence and Zonta Women's Radio 4th radio show highlighting this issue. We review this years platform: that the culture of militancy and military action provides the platform and creates the social environment that allows gender violence to persist. The Center for Global Women's Leadership http://www.16dayscwgl.rutgers.edu/ started this campaign at Rutgers University in 1991 and selected November 25th International Day Against Violence Against Women and December 10th International Human Rights Day as markers for the start and end to this annual 16 day of activism. In truth CGWL works year round on this issue and deserves a tremendous amount of credit for being a catalyst for change on the global level. The number and variety of actions around the globe as a result of their initiative is stunning. Zonta Radio marks this year with poet and actor Mary Jones whose new book Camouflaged Drama finding wholeness through poetic transformations of rhymes speak volumes about surviving violence and Jones' faith you can purchase he book from Barnes and Nobel www.barnesandnobel.com Hope's Door www.northernwestchestershelter.org CarLa Horton tunes in to share good news about a charitable gift from Verizon to support anti-violence education for teens, and we share audio from Avon's Speak Out video where survivors speak out about DV. Don't miss this.

Our in studio guest is May Krukiel. May is a psychotherapist of 25 years whose commitment to social justice has led her to specialize in working with survivors of sexual violence. Yet, it is her work to put important issues on the political agenda that brings her to Zonta Women's Community Radio. May discusses with host Roxanne Neilson her efforts to help organize women's groups to make sure that we can be most effective at getting our issues on the political table. Krukiel's team Westchester Women's Agenda works to organize a Women's Cafe that puts leaders representing various women's constituencies together to work on articulating a shared agenda- literally drawing the ideas out on table tops covered by butcher paper. She and her group are planning a Spring 2011 conference.
